Situated
between creek tributaries of the Kaskaskia River, this property has
attracted many inhabitants through the centuries. Of note among them
is Thomas Bond, nephew of the first governor of Illinois, Shadrach Bond.
Mr. Bond came to this place in 1851 with a pocketful of cash gleaned from
the 1849 California gold rush and decided to settle. The farm remained
in the Bond family for the next 120 years, until purchased in 1972 by the
Warren Brothers, William and Halleck.
In October of 1992, Illinois sitting governor Jim Edgar landed
his helicopter on what is now the first green, to take part in
ground breaking ceremonies for an endeavor that would transform
the fields and creeks. The following spring, architect Don Horrell began to contour the flat farmland, creating a
meandering network of woodlands, mounds, lake and prairie
grasslands that is today the championship course at Governors
Run.
To delineate the course Mr. Horrell took advantage of the
setting that lent itself to distinctively different styles.
The front side is characterized by native prairie textures and
lakes, promoting an open style of play. The back nine
winds through woodlands, over creeks and around lakes, resulting
in golf that places a premium on accuracy and shot making.
With five sets of tees on every hole, the course can set up very
playable. However, breezes off Lake Carlyle can turn this
gentle test into a certain fury.
